Is Facebook a Better Place to Network than Orkut

In recent times, anyone and everyone is Internet savvy. Internet is taking the world by storm and the hard wind is blowing everyone’s mind away, in a good way of course. The most popular things on the Internet are the social networking sites. There are numerous social networking sites on the net like iBiBo, Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, Hi5 and many more. Different sites are popular for different special features and each site has its own share of members from different countries. The most popular sites in India at this moment are Facebook and Orkut. Both of them are social networking sites and have a huge number of members. They even share the same members. There are people who are members of both the sites and enjoy both equally.

Facebook is much more popular in the U.S. and U.K than in India but it is steadily gaining popularity. Orkut is most popular in India and Brazil and it is also gaining popularity in other countries. If we try to compare the sites in terms of popularity, the task will be a little difficult to overcome. Orkut and Facebook are both equally competent sites and there popularity among members is purely based on user preferences. Both the sites offer networking, photo sharing, video sharing and other applications. You can connect to old friends and make new ones through these sites and both the sites offer memberships free of cost.

Facebook was launched in February 2004 and was actually open to only Harvard students. Later it was open to students of all the universities around the world but now it is open to everyone above the age of thirteen and a valid email account. It is specially known for its photo-sharing feature. It has apt security settings and gives people a chance to join groups and communities. People even join hands for a social cause through Facebook. You can connect with old friends and chat with them through the site. There are other fun applications that engage you and it is relatively easy to use. All in all Facebook rates high in user reviews.

Orkut was launched in January 2004 by Google. It was a simple site that was only open to Gmail users and you could join only through user invitations. Now the site has numerous applications, fabulous security settings and anyone can open an Orkut account. Orkut has recently undergone a massive makeover. The albums can now store 10,000 pictures and numerous videos. You can change themes and create and join infinite communities. After the makeover, Orkut has gained more popularity than before. MTV has launched MTV Roadies Battleground on Orkut. There is going to be an online Roadies challenge and it wouldn’t have been possible if Orkut wasn’t that popular. MTV got 80,000 applications and the community has over a lakh members.

Thus it is very difficult to actually determine which networking site is more popular. If you are worrying about risks than it’s is the same for every networking site. If you aren’t careful than your profile information can be used by anyone for malicious purposes. So, whether Facebook is a better networking site totally depends on user preferences. I’d vote for Orkut although I have memberships in both the sites. There are still many who’d vote for Facebook. So the matter is unresolved.
